Ready for Reuse Ceremony

DEQ, EPA recognize
CS Metals in Covent and Syngenta in St. Gabriel
for successful completion of
Ready for Reuse project
On January 24, 2007, the Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection agency recognized CS Metals of Louisiana, LLC in Convent and Syngenta Crop Protection Inc. in St. Gabriel with awards for the successful completion of Ready for Reuse projects. The Ready for Reuse designation recognizes when a site or facility has been addressed to the extent that it is safe for reuse or redevelopment.
CS Metals of Louisiana, LLC was a metals recovery facility that ceased operations in 2004. Using remediation programs offered by DEQ and EPA, CS Metals was able to cleanup the entire site in a year and a half. The property will soon be transferred to its former owner and returned to industrial use.
Syngenta Crop Protection’s facility in St. Gabriel manufactures pesticides and specialty chemicals. An area of the Syngenta facility was remediated and successfully completed closure and post closure activities in 2005.   In a joint venture with Ecoproducts Solutions Inc., Syngenta constructed a calcium chloride production facility on portion of the remediated property. The new facility eliminates the discharge of calcium chloride from Syngenta’s permitted waste water treatment system. In this case, the property is being reused in addition to yielding pollution prevention benefits.
Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is committed to utilize the “Ready for Reuse” land use revitalization program along with existing Brownfields and Voluntary Remediation programs to promote redevelopment opportunities throughout the state. “Louisiana has been recognized as a leader in the program and today is an example of why. We are recognizing two companies that brought into the program and have given old industrial sites new life under this land-renewal program.” said DEQ Deputy Secretary Karen Gautreaux during the award ceremony.
