What is the Triennial Review?

Federal regulations require that states hold public hearings at least once every three years to review applicable surface water quality standards and, as appropriate, adopt new or modified standards, taking into consideration public concerns, EPA guidance, and new scientific and technical information. This process is called a triennial review. The triennial review also provides an opportunity to discuss the priorities and commitments the agency makes with EPA and others regarding surface water quality standards.

Status of the 2016 Triennial Review

The triennial review for the Surface Water Quality Standards for Louisiana began on January 20, 2016 when a Potpourri (1601Pot1) was noticed in the Louisiana Register. A public hearing will be held at 1:30 pm on March 30, 2016 in the Galvez Building, Oliver Pollock Conference Room, 602 N. Fifth Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Interested persons are invited to attend the public hearing and submit oral comments on the surface water quality standards triennial review. Comments may also be submitted electronically to wq.standards@la.gov. Please include “Triennial Review Comments-1601Pot1” in the subject line. Written comments may be submitted to Sandy Stephens, Office of Environmental Services, Water Permits Division, P.O. Box 4313, Baton Rouge, LA 70821-4313. Comments will be accepted until 4:30 pm on March 30, 2016. All comments received during the comment period will be reviewed and used to assist in establishing public concerns and setting department water quality priorities. The department will then place activities (i.e., guidance development, research needs or rulemaking) on appropriate schedules in order to accomplish department priorities and commitments.
