DEQ monitoring at oil spill near New Orleans

On July 23, at approximately 2 a.m., a collision between a ship and a barge occurred on the Mississippi River at mile marker 98, near Harahan, splitting the barge in half. The barge was carrying #6 fuel oil and lost all of its contents, estimated at 9980 barrels. The barge came to rest at mile marker 97 at the Crescent City Connection Bridge.

DEQ seeks information on illegal dumping of drums in Baton Rouge

The Department of Environmental Quality is looking for information regarding the illegal dumping of ten drums near Spanish Town Road in Baton Rouge. Eight 55-gallon drums and two 35-gallon drums were dumped around the week of July 13 near the curve connecting North 10th Street and North 11th Street near Spanish Town Road. Working in conjunction with the Baton Rouge Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Unit, DEQ inspectors conducted field tests on the re-used drums and determined that they contained waste oil; with one drum containing acid.

    Guilty plea entered in illegal disposal incident in Lutcher

    A LaPlace man pled guilty on June 23 to illegally disposing solid waste in November of 2007. Dwayne C. Miles, 36, was hauling waste for a company doing hotel remodeling work in St. John Parish when he illegally dumped construction and demolition debris consisting of insulation, porcelain, carpeting and drywall material. After delivering a series of waste loads to the appropriate dump site, he illegally dumped the waste in a sugarcane field in Lutcher on his final two trips.

      DEQ seeks information on illegal dumping incident near Ruddock

      The Department of Environmental Quality is looking for information regarding an illegal dumping incident on Highway 51, north of Ruddock. Three 55-gallon drums were dumped by the side of the road, just south of the blue water tower, on Tuesday, July 1st. DEQ inspectors determined that the drums contained spent chemical powder from fire extinguishers.

          Louisiana gets good, bad marks in air-quality report

          Louisiana showed continued improvement in air quality in the American Lung Association's annual State of the Air Report which was released on Thursday. Although Baton Rouge is listed as the No. 10 most polluted city in America for ozone, Louisiana only had four parishes that scored Fs, according the Lung Association's grading scale. In 2003 there were 10 parishes.

            Governor proclaims May as Clean Air Month

            Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared May as Clean Air Month in Louisiana. May is traditionally the start of ozone season and the proclamation was made to encourage citizens to become familiar with the Air Quality Index, to understand what causes ozone formation and to take voluntary steps to help prevent the formation and improve air quality.

            The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality launched a new statewide effort to combat ozone and improve air quality. A statewide Ozone Steering Committee will be a key factor in an air quality education and awareness campaign.

              EPA lowers ozone standard to 75 ppb

              The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it is lowering the federal standard for the pollutant ozone to 75 parts per billion. The previous standard for ozone was 80 parts per billion on an eight-hour rotation scale known as the eight-hour standard. With the change, 26 parishes fail to meet the standard, or are "out of attainment," for the new ozone standard.
