On July 23, at approximately 2 a.m., a collision between a ship and a barge
occurred on the Mississippi River at mile marker 98, near Harahan, splitting the barge in half. The
barge was carrying #6 fuel oil and lost all of its contents, estimated at 9980 barrels. The barge came to

The Department of Environmental Quality is looking for information regarding the illegal dumping of ten drums near Spanish Town Road in Baton Rouge. Eight 55-gallon drums and two 35-gallon drums were dumped around the week of July 13 near the curve connecting North 10th Street and North 11th Street near Spanish Town Road. Working in conjunction with the Baton Rouge Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Unit, DEQ inspectors conducted field tests on the re-used drums and determined that they contained waste oil; with one drum containing acid. A LaPlace man pled guilty on June 23 to illegally disposing solid waste in November of 2007. Dwayne C. Miles, 36, was hauling waste for a company doing hotel remodeling work in St. John Parish when he illegally dumped construction and demolition debris consisting of insulation, porcelain, carpeting and drywall material. After delivering a series of waste loads to the appropriate dump site, he illegally dumped the waste in a sugarcane field in Lutcher on his final two trips. DEQ Communications - 21 days ago
The Department of Environmental Quality is looking for information regarding an illegal dumping incident on Highway 51, north of Ruddock.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it is lowering the federal standard for the pollutant ozone to 75 parts per billion. The previous standard for ozone was 80 parts per billion on an eight-hour rotation scale known as the eight-hour standard.
