Questions & Answers for Teams

Louisiana Envirothon 2009 Advisors' Handbook PDF Document

"We consider species to be like a brick in the foundation of a building. You can probably lose one or two or a dozen bricks and still have a standing house. But by the time you've lost 20 per cent of species, you're going to destabilize the entire structure. That's the way ecosystems work."    - Donald Falk

Planned Training

March 7  Location TBA
April 4 Location TBA

Teams and advisors are reminded to contact their local Toastmasters International clubs for assistance in making oral presentations and public speaking. www.toastmasters.org

“Environmental degradation is an iatrogenic disease induced by economic physicians who treat the basic malady of unlimited wants by prescribing unlimited growth.... Yet one certainly does not cure a treatment-induced disease by increasing the treatment dosage.” Herman Daly

"The value of biodiversity is more than the sum of its parts."

UNDER RECONSTRUCTION

Biodiversity is the greatest treasure we have... Its diminishment is to be prevented at all cost.
- Thomas Eisner

"Without knowing it, we utilize hundreds of products each day that owe their origin to wild animals and plants. Indeed our welfare is intimately tied up with the welfare of wildlife. Well may conservationists proclaim that by saving the lives of wild species, we may be saving our own."
- Norman Myers

"The current massive degradation of habitat and extinction of species is taking place on a catastrophically short timescale, and their effects will fundamentally reset the future evolution of the planet's biota."
-- National Academy of Sciences

Some Wildlife Info from the 2/14 Training
Some of the students were asking for more information on other skulls, such as the beaver.
Here are a few links that I found. They all seem to have excellent photos & additional information that the students/teachers should find useful.

How do you tell the difference between a Lynx pelt & bobcat pelt?
The easiest way to tell the difference between a lynx pelt & a bobcat pelt is that the lynx pelt will have long tufts of hair coming out of the ears.

What is the purpose of guard hairs?
Guard hairs are the longest, most coarse hairs in a mammal's coat, forming the topcoat (or outer coat). They taper to a point and protect the undercoat from the elements. They are often water repellent and stick out above the rest of the coat. Guard hairs add the sheen to the coat of an animal.

What is the name of the undercoat hairs?
The undercoat is made of Down hairs, also called the ground hairs. They are the very fine, fluffy hairs closest to the skin on some mammals. The hairs are short and crimped, which makes them highly efficient for trapping air and insulating the animal.

Scientists know we must protect species because they are working parts of our life-support system.
- Paul Ehrlich
