About Us
The main environmental position at DEQ is the Environmental Scientist, which is a training series including three levels, Entry, Journeyman, and Advanced Journeyman. These are classified Louisiana State Civil Service positions. The minimum qualifications for the Entry level is a Baccalaureate degree with a major in one of the following scientific fields: animal science, biological sciences, chemistry, geosciences, atmospheric sciences, soil sciences, physical geography, physics, health sciences, environmental sciences, wildlife and fisheries sciences, engineering, toxicology, nuclear science, agronomy, forestry, health physics, medical physics or statistics and quantitative methods. The Journeyman and Advanced Journeyman level positions require professional level scientific/technical environmental or radiation experience.

When a vacancy occurs, a Certificate of Eligible candidates is requested from the Department of Civil Service. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) was mandated by the Louisiana Legislature on February 1, 1984. Its mission is to maintain a healthful and safe environment for the people of Louisiana. The department consists of highly trained personnel dedicated to preserving and protecting Louisiana's environment.
At the top of the organizational chart is the Office of the Secretary which has the managerial and supervisory responsibilities of the department. Also located in this office are the Legal, Rules and Regulations Section, Criminal Investigations, Communications and Public Relations Section and Audit Division, which provides services to all DEQ programs. The Office of Management and Finance is responsible for managing the essential operations and support services for the agency.
To carry out the mission of DEQ, three Offices manage specific environmental programs: Office of Environmental Services, Office of Environmental Compliance and the Office of Environmental Assessment.
