LDEQ creates Nonpoint Source Pollution demonstration to continue outreach efforts during COVID-19
With COVID-19 restrictions limiting outreach efforts, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s (LDEQ) Nonpoint Source (NPS) Pollution group created a video demonstrating the EnviroScape model. The EnviroScape model effectively communicates the shared responsibility for the environment, specifically water quality, to people of all ages.

New online, interactive map details water bodies included in Louisiana Water Quality Integrated Report
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) has launched a new interactive map that details the water bodies included in the Louisiana Water Quality Integrated Report. The Louisiana Water Quality Integrated Report (IR) is the current format for the state’s biennial reports on the water quality of Louisiana surface waters.

Gov. Edwards Declares State of Emergency in Advance of Hurricane Zeta
Gov. Edwards Declares State of Emergency in Advance of Hurricane Zeta. Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards issued a state of emergency in advance of Hurricane Zeta, which could impact Louisiana later in the week, though the final track is still uncertain. According to the National Weather Service, Zeta strengthened into a hurricane today and is expected to impact the northern Gulf Coast by Wednesday. Strong winds, coastal flooding, heavy rain and tornadoes are all possible.

United States Reaches Agreement to Protect New Orleans Waterways and Lake Pontchartrain
Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Justice announced a settlement with the Churchill Downs Louisiana Horseracing Company LLC, d/b/a Fair Grounds Corporation (Fair Grounds) that will resolve years of Clean Water Act (CWA) violations at its New Orleans racetrack. Under the settlement, Fair Grounds will eliminate unauthorized discharges of manure, urine and process wastewater through operational changes and construction projects at an estimated cost of $5,600,000. The company also will pay a civil penalty of $2,790,000, the largest ever paid by a concentrated animal feeding operation in a CWA matter.
