Asbestos and Lead-Based Paint Compliance

Compliance within the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) includes a comprehensive program of asbestos inspections, lead inspections, and regulatory oversight to ensure facilities and contractors meet all state and federal environmental requirements. When violations or non‑compliance are identified during these inspections, cases may be referred to other LDEQ divisions—including Enforcement, Accreditations, Legal, or the Small Business Assistance Program—for further review or corrective action. This coordinated compliance process helps protect public health, maintain environmental safety, and support regulated entities in meeting Louisiana’s asbestos and lead regulations.

Asbestos Management Plan Inspections

LDEQ conducts Asbestos Management Plan inspections to ensure schools and other regulated facilities maintain accurate documentation and follow required procedures for managing asbestos‑containing materials. These inspections are randomly selected and scheduled by the agency to verify compliance with state and federal asbestos regulations. During each inspection, LDEQ reviews management plans, evaluates the condition of identified materials, and confirms that operations and maintenance activities are being implemented correctly. This proactive oversight helps reduce asbestos exposure risks and helps to ensure long‑term regulatory compliance.

Asbestos Demolition and Renovation Inspections

Asbestos demolition and renovation inspections are initiated when project notifications are filed with the Louisiana DEQ. Once a contractor or building owner submits the required asbestos notification, LDEQ schedules an inspection to verify that an asbestos survey has been completed, regulated materials are properly identified, and all removal or disturbance activities comply with NESHAP and Louisiana asbestos regulations. These inspections help ensure safe handling, containment, and disposal of asbestos during construction, renovation, and demolition projects

Lead Abatement Inspections

Lead abatement inspections are also triggered by project notifications submitted to LDEQ. After a notification is filed, LDEQ reviews the planned work and conducts inspections to confirm that certified lead professionals are performing the abatement and that all containment, work practices, and clearance procedures meet state and federal lead regulations. These inspections play a critical role in preventing lead exposure and ensuring safe, compliant abatement activities in homes, commercial buildings, and public facilities.
