Legal Affairs

Who We Are & What We Do

The Legal Affairs Division is housed within the Office of the Secretary and advises the Secretary and department on all legal matters such as permitting issues, enforcement actions, and legislation. The division is managed by General Counsel, Jill C. Clark.  The Deputy General Counsel, Deidra Johnson, serves as her first assistant.

Mission

The mission of the Legal Affairs Division is to provide legal consultation and representation to the various offices of the department with regard to permitting, remediation, enforcement, grants, contracts, personnel, legislation, intergovernmental agreements, or such other matters as may be necessary.  It is also our mission  to provide high quality, intelligent, and reliable services to the department in a timely and professional manner to ensure that the agency, its executives, and staff maintain compliance with the law while effectively and efficiently administering environmental laws and regulations.
