X-ray
Anyone who operates, installs, or uses X‑ray equipment in a medical, dental, veterinary, industrial, or research setting is required to have an X‑ray license or registration issued by LDEQ.
An official website of the State of Louisiana.
You only need a license or registration if you work with radiation in a way that is regulated under state or federal rules. In general, anyone who uses, possesses, installs, operates, or stores radioactive materials or radiation‑producing equipment must have the appropriate authorization from LDEQ. The specific requirement—license, registration, or certification—depends on the type of radiation source and the work being performed.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality issues licenses to facilities that use and/or are in possession of radioactive material. Licensees can locate radioactive material license guides containing specific application requirements by area of interest at [“Radiation Forms, Guides, and Information”]. After the initial license is granted, the license may be modified during renewal or amendment request process to reflect changes in circumstances affecting the operations after the license was issued.
If you have a radiation machine or facility, you must submit an application to register such facility and each radiation machine in accordance with LAC 33:XV.204.A.1-3. Application requirements to register a radiation machine depend on the type of radiation machine and the intended use. Changes to the information contained in an application and/or registration certificate must also be reported. This includes, but is not limited to, address changes, billing party changes, ownership changes, and radiation machine disposals.
In Louisiana, the LDEQ certifies industrial radiographers, trainees, and instructors. To become certified, individuals must complete approved classroom training, hands-on on-the-job training, and pass required examinations. LDEQ helps maintain consistent oversight and supports safe industrial radiography practices across the state.
Anyone who operates, installs, or uses X‑ray equipment in a medical, dental, veterinary, industrial, or research setting is required to have an X‑ray license or registration issued by LDEQ.
Anyone who possesses, uses, stores, transports, or works with radioactive materials—whether in medical, industrial, research, academic, or commercial settings—is required to obtain a radioactive materials license from LDEQ.
Anyone who performs industrial radiography using radioactive sources or radiation‑producing equipment must hold a valid Industrial Radiographer Certification.
Anyone submitting a reciprocity form is an out-of-state company or individual licensed to use radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment in another state who plan to temporarily perform work in Louisiana.
Some radiation machine installations require a shielding review prior to installation in accordance with LAC 33:XV.603.E. If you are unsure if a shielding review is required, please contact the Radiation Licensing Section prior to construction.
