Open burning household waste is illegal in Louisiana - December 18, 2019
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) reminds residents that any open burning of household waste, solid waste and chemicals is illegal in the state of Louisiana – whether conducted on private property or not. Open burning is harmful to those conducting the open burn as well as their families, neighbors, pets and livestock. The ash generated from an open burn contains toxic materials that contaminate our air, soil and ground water.

It is dry in Louisiana right now and wildfires could be started easily, so it is important to know the regulations and laws concerning open burning in the state. When people burn waste, it causes air pollution and, in some cases, can be illegal. Open burning of certain materials is prohibited in Louisiana. If you have a trash pile and burn household waste, construction debris or anything other than vegetative matter, you could be subject to a fine.

DEQ sends reminder on Open Burning regulations - October 22, 2014
Burning waste causes air pollution and the open burning of certain materials is prohibited in Louisiana. There are also local ordinances pertaining to what can and can't be burned. If you have a trash pile and burn household waste, construction debris or anything other than vegetative matter, you are violating the law. Under Title 33, section 1109 of the Louisiana Administrative Code, "no person shall cause or allow the burning of waste or other combustible material on any property owned by him or under his control."

Today, DEQ Secretary Peggy Hatch and Louisiana National Guard Adjutant Maj. Gen. Glenn Curtis called on the EPA to fulfill its obligation to Louisiana residents and safely dispose of M6 explosives at Camp Minden. In a letter today, Hatch and Curtis called on EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy to "intervene to address the persistent mishandling of M6 disposal at Camp Minden by EPA Region 6."
