Sankofa Wetland Environmental Empowerment Team Receives EPA Environmental Justice Grant - February 27, 2020
Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gave an Environmental Justice Small Grant to the Sankofa Wetland Environmental Empowerment Team (SWEET). The grant will fund a project to engage high school students in New Orleans, Louisiana, on wetland habitats and green infrastructure projects.

EPA issues Multipurpose grant to Louisiana to reduce paper waste - July 23, 2020
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently issued a Multipurpose grant (MPG) to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources to analyze and review Underground Injection Control (UIC) permits. The state has developed a system to receive permits online rather than in paper form.

DEQ's hazardous waste permitting program commended by EPA - May 09, 2012
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 6 recently conducted an in-depth review of DEQ's Resource Conservation and Recovery Act permitting program regarding hazardous waste permits. This review was to verify that the DEQ program is in line with the policies, responsibilities and procedures established by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 for hazardous waste permitting programs.

California Woman and Her Company Sentenced for Clean Air Act Violation - July 15, 2016
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced that CHEERY WAY, INC., and ELAINE CHIU, age 60, a resident of San Francisco, California, were sentenced today by the Honorable Susie Morgan to five years of probation, a $500,000 fine, and $162,520 in restitution to workers for medical monitoring costs for violating notification requirements under the Clean Air Act.

Xplor Energy pleads guilty to felony Clean Water Act violation - November 20, 2014
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced that XPLOR Energy SPV-1, Inc. ("XPLOR"), an Oklahoma corporation residing in Southlake, Texas, pled guilty today to a one-count bill of information which charged the company with knowingly violating the Clean Water Act, Title 33, United States Code, Section 1319(c)(2)(A).

Amphibian Research Monitoring Initiative (ARMI)
The U.S. Geological Survey's Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative (ARMI) is divided into seven regions. The south-central region includes the States of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. We are currently conducting research projects designed to monitor amphibians on Federal lands in these States and to research possible causes of declines in amphibian populations. These potential threats include loss or degradation of habitat, disease, and contamination or pollution.

Jeffrey Nolan recognized by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for Deepwater Horizon investigation - March 04, 2015
Jeffrey Nolan, Manager of DEQ's Criminal Investigation Division, was recognized Tuesday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for Excellence in Criminal Enforcement in the investigation of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in April 2010.

Laboratories must submit data to DEQ under new EPA rule - June 07, 2012
Accredited and in-house laboratories that submit data to DEQ will be required to adhere to new U.S, Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. EPA recently updated its "Guidelines Establishing Test Procedures for the Analysis of Pollutants Under the Clean Water Act; Analysis and Sampling Procedures", also known as the "Method Update Rule." The new rule was published on May 18, 2012 and will take effect on June 18, 2012.

Washington Parish School Board must institute asbestos handling training - November 03, 2014
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced today that his office has agreed to defer prosecution on the bill of information it filed against the Washington Parish School Board ("school board") charging it with a felony violation of the Clean Air Act for failing to notify the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality of the 2011 demolition of the Old Pine High School which contained regulated asbestos containing material.

The Wetland Morphology model was developed to predict coastal Louisiana wetland morphologic dynamics in a changing environment (e.g., global warming, eustatic sea‐ level rise [ESLR], land subsidence, freshwater and mineral sediment supply reductions). The model consists of relative elevation and landscape change sub‐models that are developed based upon the best available data and our most recent understanding of the role of coastal biophysical processes including land loss, land gain, marsh collapse, sediment transport, sediment deposition, sediment retention, vertical accretion, organic matter production, sea level rise (SLR), and subsidence on shaping coastal morphology.
